What age can a child start sudoku?
About four years old, on a 4×4 grid. That is much earlier than most people expect, because sudoku is not a maths puzzle: the digits are symbols, and a child who can recognise four shapes and notice when one is repeated already has everything a 4×4 needs. The right age is decided by the size of the grid rather than by the child’s arithmetic, and the ladder from 4×4 up to a real 9×9 has four rungs, each asking for one genuinely new skill.
Sudoku has no arithmetic in it
Nothing is ever added, subtracted or compared. Replace the digits 1 to 4 with a circle, a square, a triangle and a star and the puzzle is identical.
This matters practically, in two directions. It means a child who has not met numbers yet can play, and it means a child who dislikes maths lessons has no reason to dislike this. That is logic in the plain sense, the kind that turns up again in reading a timetable and in every board game with a rule about where a piece may go.
The four rungs, and what each one asks
The ages below are the ones the tiers were designed around, not measured thresholds. Children vary enormously, and the grid a child enjoys tells you more than the number on their birthday.
4×4, from about four. Four symbols, four rows, four columns, four 2×2 boxes. Usually solvable by looking: a child scans a row, sees three of the four symbols, and puts the missing one in. There is rarely a decision, only an observation. This is the right first rung precisely because being right feels automatic.
6×6, from about six. Six symbols, and the real step up: boxes that are rectangular instead of square, usually 2×3. A child now has to track three overlapping constraints where the third one has an unfamiliar shape. It is the first grid where a child sometimes has to check rather than see.
9×9, from about eight. The real thing. Nine symbols, 3×3 boxes, and the point at which pure scanning stops being enough: some cells only resolve after you have worked out something about a different cell. This is where sudoku becomes a puzzle rather than an exercise.
12×12, later, and optional. Twelve symbols and 3×4 boxes. Nothing new conceptually: the same 9×9 reasoning over a bigger board, with more bookkeeping. Some children love it. It is a stamina tier, not a skill tier.

Answer: 4 — Right — and notice what you did. You did not add anything. You listed which of the four symbols was missing. That is the whole skill, and a four-year-old can do it with animals instead of digits.
How to introduce it
- Say the rule out loud, once, and then stop talking. “Every row, every column and every little box gets each number exactly once.” That is the entire ruleset, and children work faster than an explanation.
- Point at the constraint, never at the answer. “What is already in that row?” keeps the solve theirs. “It’s a four” ends the puzzle.
- One puzzle per sitting. A 4×4 takes two or three minutes and the interest goes shortly afterwards. Sudoku wants to be picked up often, not for long.
- Do not move up a size because they finished quickly. Move up when the same size stops producing mistakes. Speed is fluency; accuracy is understanding.
- Let them be stuck for a while. The pause before a child sees a constraint is the part that is doing the work.
Whether an app’s ladder is real
Plenty of kids sudoku apps advertise several difficulties and ship one grid with fewer clues removed. That is a difficulty slider, not a ladder, and it skips the only step that teaches anything: the change in box shape.
Two questions separate them.
Does the grid size actually change, or only the number of givens? A 9×9 with thirty-eight clues is not a 6×6. If every screenshot shows the same board, the ladder is cosmetic.
Can a beginner reach the tier that suits them? Most apps unlock by progression, so an eight-year-old has to grind through pre-school 4×4 boards to reach a 9×9, and a four-year-old hits the paywall before the app has shown what it is. Free levels at the start of every tier is the arrangement that lets both of them try the thing they came for. That is what we do, and it costs us sales from the older children who might have paid to skip ahead — it is worth saying that out loud, because it is the part that makes the claim checkable.
The other thing worth checking is that the puzzles are actually valid. A sudoku with two solutions is not a sudoku, and a child who is told they are wrong while holding a correct answer learns the wrong lesson about their own reasoning.
On paper or on a phone
Paper is genuinely good for this: nothing interrupts, and a pencil makes the child commit. The argument for an app is narrower and real — it can verify instantly, it never runs out of puzzles at the right level, and it fits in a pocket for the queue at the doctor’s.
